The County, Town and Downtown BIA will work to keep the business community informed as the downtown construction project moves forward. Communication is important to ensuring a sense of confidence during the disruptions. A project liaison person will work directly with local government, the BIA, businesses, project engineers, project contractors and the general public to keep information flowing.

Both the L&A County Economic Development Office and the BIA have been working to provide educational sessions for our businesses to upgrade their skills. Whether it's online marketing, e-commerce, website basics or social media. Consider taking advantage of these low-cost and sometimes free opportunities.

Construction Tips For Your Business

Promotions

  • Are you doing more or cutting back? Co-promoting with a business that has products/services complimentary to yours? Are you taking advantage of any co-op opportunities provided by the Napanee BIA? Are you planning to offer special sales during the construction period? Holding special events? Are you utilizing all social media avenues available? Will you offer coupons to your customers who are buying from you now that are redeemable only during the construction period? Will you offer those coupons to your customers during construction that are redeemable after the work is done as a thank you for their loyalty?
     

Customer Communication

  • Do you have a mailing list for your frequent customers? Keeping in touch with your best customers is a great way to target your special offers. Your loyal customers will find a way to get to your business! Please remember Canada's Anti-Spam Law when setting up your mailing list. Ask the BIA if you need more info.
     

Alternate Access

  • Do you have a back entrance your customers can use? Is it inviting? Did you remember to remind your customers about this option?
     

Inventory

  • You may want to consider your inventory if construction will be in front of your business.
     

Staffing

  • If you expect business to be down a bit during the construction period, should you consider hiring fewer people during that time?
     

Support

  • Remember to support your neighbouring businesses. Encourage your staff to shop at businesses that are having work done in front of their stores - they will return the favour when it's your turn. Do you offer discounts to staff members of other downtown stores? If so, do they know?
     

Temporary Locations

  • Could you open up a pop-up at a downtown location that is not inside the construction zone or partner with another downtown business to share some space and remind customers you are open for business?
     

Online Visibility

  • Have you invested in a website that shows your product lines? Is it capable of including an online shopping component? Can you deliver your products locally?
     

Store Hours

  • Could you open later in the day and extend your hours longer into the evening after construction crews have left?
     

Think Outside the Box

  • Have a great idea that you've always wanted to try? No idea is a stupid idea - get creative and explore new plans! Have a brain-storming session with your staff.
     

Positive Attitude

  • Operating a business with construction in front of your store isn't easy, but it most certainly is doable. Talk to others who have been there and learn from their best practices. Stay positive! It will come to an end and it will look great once it's done!
