Admittedly missing my dose of apocalyptic zombie-based television shows, I have delved into books of the same genre. I tried a ‘flashback’ novel from 2010 called Rot & Ruin by Jonathan Maberry, a young adult novel in a four-book series. Rot & Ruin refers to the landscape outside the perimeter fence of Mountainside – Benny Imura’s home. The novel is set more than a decade past the initial zombie outbreak, and focuses on the relationships of Benny – with his friends and his older step-brother Tom. With lots of action, similar to my favourite television programs, and great character development within this post-apocalyptic setting, I was hooked. You get to see Benny, our protagonist, mature and change, as you move between his Mountainside home and his new world beyond the fence, with zombies, bad guys and even a little bit of romance.

You too can find a book or series that is similar to a favourite show:

  • Downton Abbey’ fan? – pick up The House at Riverton by Kate Morton
  • Mad for Mad Men? Revisit identity crisis with Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates
  • Intoxicated by the Sex and the City revival? Grab a cosmo-inspired drink and read Good in Bed by Jennifer Weiner
