Andree recently enjoyed Kim Thúy's Vi, which she describes as "a truly magical read." Here is her review:

Vi by Kim Thúy is an evocative, lyrical read. The story shifts between past and present flawlessly. Vi (“precious, tiny, one”) is a Vietnamese girl who escapes to Canada in the 1970s with her mother, brothers and numerous other ‘boat people’. Her father, who has lived a spoiled life, remains behind creating a vacuum in the family. The escape from Vietnam, the time in a Malaysian refugee camp and the treacherous trip to Canada give the reader a glimpse into the refugee experience.

In short chapters the writer presents the family’s background. Their voyage and new life in Quebec are also described in brief vignettes. The book is rooted in Vi’s growth and development from child to woman. Her journey brings her full circle as years later she returns to Vietnam for work.

Ever phrase in this short book reveals a wealth of meaning. The experience of refugees who must reinvent themselves in new countries is brought home with beauty and dignity. A truly magical read.
