Kristin recently read (and loved!) The Man Who Loved Libraries: The Story of Andrew Carnegie by Andrew Larsen. Here is her review:

This is a new biography for juvenile readers that is now available at your library. This is a beautiful tale that I think both children and adults alike will adore, as it teaches them about a generous man from the past who appreciated all that libraries can offer to people and their communities.

This book tells the story of Andrew Carnegie, who immigrated to America when he was a child with his family in the 1800s in search of a better life. Once he was in the United States, this thoughtful and imaginative child grew into a hard-working man that took advantage of his opportunities which allowed him to become quite wealthy in a short amount of time. Instead of keeping all his riches, Mr. Carnegie believed in sharing it with others, and one way he did this was by funding the construction of over 2,500 public libraries worldwide. He built them in cities, towns and small villages in a variety of countries including Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the United States. Andrew Carnegie was a man that understood public libraries were a great way for people (especially those who lived in rural communities) to learn and obtain a wealth of knowledge just by reading. It was this fact that drove Mr. Carnegie on his personal mission and passion of bringing libraries to the masses.

In addition, this story is brought to life thanks to Katty Maurey who drew very stylish illustrations to accompany the text so that young readers can be transported back in time to see what life was like for this extraordinary man. Reading about a man who was willing to donate his own money and time so that all of us would be able to feel the joy of borrowing books for free is incredibly inspiring. I wholeheartedly suggest this book and it is a great way for library enthusiasts to teach their children about a legendary man. In closing, this book reminds us how we all need to be thankful for our own County of L&A libraries which provide quality services and lifelong learning opportunities through books and other resources to meet the needs of people within our community!
