When Bridgerton was released on Netflix last Christmas, I don't think any of us were prepared for the sudden obsession with steamy regency romance it inspired in so many fans. Julia Quinn's Bridgeton series has been a historical romance mainstay since the release of The Duke and I in 2000, but never has Quinn been more popular than she is currently. If you have already torn through the nine Bridgerton novels (and the prequels!) and are looking for more banter-filled, sultry historical reads then consider these Julia Quinn read-alikes.

While Lisa Kleypas also writes contemporary romance, she is best known for her steamy Victorian-era historicals populated by characters with charm and wit. Similar to Quinn's novels, Kleypas' stories feature banter-filled dialogue and engaging storylines that lead to satisfying conclusions. Chasing Cassandra is the latest in her popular Ravenel series (which does not need to be read in order). Featuring an opposites-attract storyline, it follows a wealthy and cunning railway magnate who shocks himself by suddenly falling for the titular Lady Cassandra.

Eloisa James, like Quinn, has a knack for combining sensuality, humour, and strong heroines in a Regency setting. While romantic relationships always form the heart of their stories, both authors also tend to explore the other relationships in a woman's life, such as those between sisters and friends. For Regency flare similar to Bridgerton, check out James' Duchess Quartet.

Stephanie Laurens writes Regency romances that are steamy, engaging, and often centered on familial connections and duty. Lauren's books don't offer the same cheek and wit as Quinn's but if you are looking for intense heroes, strong-willed heroines, and fast-paced intrigues (with happy endings!), her novels are worth a try. Start with Devil's Bride, a marriage of convenience novel that combines spicy dialogue with a thread of mystery.

Looking for humour and sexual tension in equal measure? Similar to Quinn, author Amanda Quick is best known for her engaging historical novels set in 19th century England. Her most popular book is Surrender, another marriage of convenience novel (sensing a theme?) between an experienced fortune-hunter and the naive but spirited heiress. Quick also writes contemporary romantic suspense and novels set in the Victorian period.

Sarah Maclean is yet another popular Regency Romance writer. Her novels are generally light, humorous in tone, and feature appealing protagonists who run up against societal expectations. As expected, her books are chock full of steam and engaging will-they/won't-they storylines. Start with The Rogue Not Taken, the first in her Scandal and Scoundrel series, which follows a Lady as she tries to escape aristocratic society by stowing away in an infamous Marquess' carriage – creating even more trouble in the process.

Search the library catalogue here for hundreds of authors and books like the ones described above and you will easily discover some Regency romances to satisfy your Bridgerton cravings while you wait for the next season to drop.
