Muse-Ed: An Eventful Autumn

The fall/winter season at the museum is nothing short of exciting... and busy! Between our regular programs of Tuesday Night at the Museum, Live at the Museum and Museum Kids, I am so excited to have planned a busy few weeks of events for our entire community to enjoy. 

Exciting School Visits

How fitting that on the day we start our School Program “Snow: Canadian Identity” we have a big snow storm (adults I’m sorry, but kids you’re welcome for your first snow day of the season)! Over the next few weeks we will have hundreds of local area children through our museum doors, learning about winter traditions.

They have also been asked to be a part of a very special community exhibit that coincides with the original history of snowmen. During their program they will be building their own “snowperson” that represents themselves or one of their favorite people or animals. These snowy creations will be open as a public exhibit at the museum from January 18-February 28.

A Busy November

November programming is almost over for the month, even though it feels like November just started!  Our Museum Kids were taught by Chrissy and Kyle from Sparkbox Studios about relief printing, and all made printed reusable bags using fallen leaves.

We have hosted two Ancestry programs at the Amherstview and Napanee Library branches. For our monthly Tuesday Night at the Museum, we hosted an evening of History and Fiction. Special guest speaker Janet Kellough shared her experiences writing the Thaddeus Lewis Mystery Series. 

Our next Live at the Museum is on November 29th at 7pm. I have no doubt that Jeff Callery will put on an entertaining show with his amazing musicality and skills on his guitar. If you would like to attend, tickets are only $3 and sold at the door. 

Looking Ahead to December

The museum is ringing in the Holiday Season on December 1st with the Grace United Church Bell Ringers, tickets are $3 and sold at the door. The December edition of Museum Kids with host Betsy “The Dinosaur Lady”, is going to be a roaring good time for any dinosaur enthusiast. This free event is open to the public to come and enjoy the reading of “The Night Before Christmas in the Dinosaur Museum”, to see and explore artifacts, create a clay model dinosaur, read up on your dinosaur facts, play dinosaur games, and even make dinosaur masks and hand puppets.

Canadian Wildlife photographer, Bill Bickle, will be at the museum on December 8th talking about his Great Bear expedition. This family friendly program is intended to inspire the nature lovers out there, and teach them how to capture the perfect shot. Children are invited to bring in a 4x6 nature photo that they have taken to create an ornament for our Canadian wild life evergreen tree, supplies will be provided. Regular museum admission will apply. 

To finish off the holiday season celebrations at the Museum, we have our 5th annual Christmas Tree event which is free for all who attend. With 12 trees decorated by Napanee community organizations, we invite you in to enjoy the beauty of the trees, hear live music from Jazz singer Hannah Barstow (originally from Napanee), visit reindeer in the courtyard, have a picture with Father Christmas and of course enjoy some yummy treats from Milk and Cookies Café. This year we will also have a special “Giving Tree” set up in our front lobby from December 4th-January 2nd.  We invite our community to come in and place any items relating to winter warmth onto the tree, with all items being donated to the Napanee Salvation Army.
