Stories and Working with Memory: A Workshop with Author Denise Chong

Marshall Barn, 1830 South Shore Road, Stella

Denise Chong, an award-winning author best known for her family memoir, The Concubine's Children, has published four books of non-fiction, each as much a personal tale as social history. In researching our family stories, human nature is to hone in on the unknown or untold, and to try to peel back layers of family secrets. In this workshop, drawing upon examples from her research for her books, Denise discusses the writer's task of turning knowing into telling and the power and flaws of memory. She also raises issues of privacy and respect, and a writer's intentions in bringing such stories to the page.

In this interactive afternoon workshop Denise will explore with you working with memory in terms of piecing together a story from the past or a description an event perhaps sparked by a photograph or a letter. You may be thinking about writing a family history which would involve talking to, asking questions of, interviewing, probing someone's memory or recollection. Then Denise will go from there to what is involved if you are trying to wrestle your story to the page. We are each in our own ways storytellers. No exercises but lots of opportunity to ask questions and explore together how to get started capturing your story.

$25 per person. Advance tickets essential. Contact Elizabeth Barr ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) or Michèle Le Lay ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) to reserve your place.
