The County of Lennox and Addington has access to the best healthcare facilities in Eastern Ontario.

Lennox & Addington County General Hospital

In April 1966, the Lennox & Addington County General Hospital opened its doors to its first patients. Forty years later, April 2006, the hospital received approval from the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care to proceed with a redevelopment project, which will equip the hospital to serve the needs of the community for the next several decades.

In June 1998 the Lennox & Addington County General Hospital began planning for an addition to accommodate 24 complex continuing care beds and include renovations to other areas within the hospital. During the ten years that have elapsed, Board members and staff have devoted countless hours working with consultants, architects and ministry staff to finalize plans.

The redevelopment will involve almost every area in the hospital.  The project includes construction of a new 24 bed complex continuing care wing, the expansion of the Emergency Department, the creation of a new outpatient clinic, the construction of two new operating rooms and a same day surgery area, relocation of pharmacy and physiotherapy and renovation of the inpatient unit in addition to many other support areas.

Phasing of Construction

Work on the site started in July 2006 and completed in late 2008.  The first phase of the redevelopment, concentrating on the two large additions at the North and South ends of the building. Phase 2 involves continuation of the Emergency Department expansion and renovations to the existing inpatient area, resulting in a long overdue updated and more spacious unit. Phase 3 to 6 will complete the expansion of the Emergency Department and renovations to Surgical Services and Ambulatory Care Units.

Facility

The new patient care wing to the south is now officially open for patient care.  On February 26, 2008, the inpatient unit was temporarily relocated to the new wing while the existing main floor of the hospital is systematically renovated. Once renovations to the existing inpatient unit is complete, acute care patients will return to their original location and the new wing will be ready for occupancy of the new Complex Continuing Care Services.  Recruitment strategies to staff the new wing are in place and ready to begin early this summer.

To the north of the existing building, Emergency Services has been expanded to accommodate the growing needs of our community, which includes the addition of an ambulance bay with their own designated entrance off of Bridge Street.

The new surgical suits and outpatient clinic area is relocated near the front of the hospital for easier access to same day procedures.

Outpatient Physiotherapy services are located at the back of the building with their own designated parking area and entrance for more convenient access.
