The VON is offering a FREE 12-week fall prevention program for anyone 65 and over. Classes will include an educational component on reducing your risk for falls, as well as an exercise component focused on balance and strength. Harvey

Lennox Community Theatre, 2219 County Road 11, Selby

Don't miss community theatre at its finest in Selby. the comedy 'Harvey' debuts on September 23rd. Elwood P. Dowd is an congenial man who claims to have an unseen (and presumably imaginary) friend Harvey, whom Elwood describes as a six-foot, and one-half-inch tall pooka resembling a human-like rabbit. Elwood introduces Harvey to everyone he meets. His social-climbing sister, Veta, increasingly finds his eccentric behaviour embarrassing. So, she decides to have him committed to a sanitarium. That's when the magic that is Harvey steps in.

Books Behind Bars Exhibit

County of L&A Libraries, Amherstview Branch, 322 Amherst Drive, Amherstview & Napanee Branch, 25 River Road, Napanee

With thanks to the W.D. Jordan Special Collections Library at Queen’s University, the County of L&A Libraries will be exhibiting penitentiary literature (prison newsletters and prison narratives) from September 1st to December 15th. 

Personal Narratives from Prison - Amherstview Branch
In this exhibit, we will be showcasing books about the life experienced in prison. There is a special emphasis here on books written at Kingston Penitentiary.

The Canadian Penal Press - Napanee Branch
This exhibit will display a selection of early newsletters or ‘joint-magazines’ from Kingston area prisons, providing an in-depth look at writings by prisoners.

OLA Evergreen Award Voting

County of Lennox & Addington Libraries

The Ontario Library Association's Evergreen Award is best described as the “readers’ choice” of Canadian literary awards. Each year, a list of ten nominees is selected by a committee of librarians in and in October, during Canadian Library Month, library patrons from all across the province can vote on their favorite.  The 2016 Evergreen list features a diverse list of titles. It spans all genres, both fiction and non-fiction, and is well-representative of what Canadian authors have to offer Canadian readers. You only need to read one the following titles to be eligible to vote – so there is still time for you to participate! You can cast your vote at any library branch in L&A this month. Forest Field Day

669 County Road 15, Tamworth

The Ontario Woodlot Association (Quinte and Limestone Chapters) is offering a half day of forest activity in a unique location: the Kennedy Field Station just north of Tamworth on the Salmon River.

The Saturday, October 1 event includes a morning walking tour to examine pine plantations, hardwood forest and river shoreline, with guides explaining tree and plant species, plantation management, and general forest health. The Kingston Field Naturalists will describe their “bio-blitz,” a comprehensive inventory of species. A friendly competition will test your knowledge of species and forest health; we hear rumours of prizes of unbelievable value!

Whatever your question: tree health, invasive species, horse logging, or something else forest-related, come out and talk to the experts.
The Field Station, owned by Queen’s University, is a site for student programs and ground water studies. (See www.waterresearchcentre.ca/kennedy-field-station)

The 5th Loyalist Studio Tour is on October 1st and 2nd from 11am to 4pm. The tour starts at 266 Nicholson Pt. Road, just west of Amherstview, off of Bath Rd. There are eleven artists showing their work at seven locations all within 3 kilometers of each other, on the shores of Lake Ontario. You will meet the artists and be able to talk to them about their work. We only open our doors to the public once a year in conjunction with Culture Days. The event is on Tuesday, October 18th at 7pm.  Dan Needles, well-known for his Wingfield Farm and Persephone Township stories, will regale the audience with a "Persephonized" visit to Lennox and Addington. GrassRoots Growers Event Featuring Dr. Michael Runtz

St. Patrick School, Erinsville

Dr. Michael Runtz, a highly respected naturalist, nature photographer and natural history author, will present his talk, “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly:  The Wild Side of a Garden” on Thursday, October 27 at St. Patrick School in Erinsville at 7 pm. Folk Art – the Eccentric and Exceptional

L&A County Museum & Archives, 97 Thomas Street East, Napanee

Tuesday Night at the Museum returns on November 15th with a talk by featured guest exhibitors David and Mary Jo Field. Folk art is a widely used term and often misunderstood. In the antique collecting community, folk art is recognized as a distinct art form and is often highly valued. The exhibit addresses the origin and definition of folk art, the prevalence of folk art in domestic life – both utilitarian and play, and the extensive use of animal imagery in folk art. Special attention will be focused on pieces and people that contributed to folk art from L&A County and surrounding area. Tickets are $3 each and available at the door. The classic story of a plucky, attractive, orphaned girl living an oppressed existence under the thumb of her wicked stepmother and ugly stepsisters. With the help of her friend Buttons, a young nobleman named Dandini, and an inexperienced but determined Fairy Godmother, she rises above her humble beginnings to marry her Prince Charming. Whether you’re a novice or experienced collector, you can benefit from learning the ins and outs of hockey card collecting. The Grand Old Enterprise Jamboree returns on October 5th at the Enterprise Hall starting at 1 pm. Guest entertainers will be Jon McLurg and Landon Chatterton.
