Memoir Monday: Love Among the Ruins

Don't miss the next edition of Memoir Monday taking place at the L&A County Libraries, Napanee Branch on June 27th!

Harry Leslie Smith, born in 1923, is a British writer and political commentator. He grew up inYorkshire and served in the RAF during the WWII, later moving to Canada. After retiring, Smith began writing his memoirs and about social history. He has written four books about Britain during the Great Depression, WWII and post war austerity. He writes for The Guardian newspaper and is an in demand public speaker. 

The County of L&A Libraries are pleased to have the opportunity to host Harry for our June edition of Memoir Monday. Harry’s latest book is called Love Among The Ruins. This memoir chronicles his time stationed in occupied Hamburg. There he met a German woman – the inspiration for this true story of love against all odds. Waterside Summer Series: Bel Canto Wind Quintet

Waterside 2016 opens on Sunday, July 3rd at 3:15 pm with the first-ever appearance on our stage of a woodwind quintet: Bel Canto Wind Quintet. Your starting point is The Neilson Store Museum and Cultural Centre at 5220 Front Road to pick up your free map of the galleries and studios open all over the Island.   To reach the Museum turn left on Front Road when you leave the ferry. From the mainland take the ferry from Millhaven on the half hour (8:30, 9:30, 10:30 and so on) and return on the hour (11:00, 12:00, 1:00 and so on).  Cars cost $9.00 for a return trip.  Bicycles are $1.50. If you've never been to the Island this is your opportunity to enjoy a ferry ride, a chance to discover the Island's galleries and studios, explore the Island to see Canada's best collection of dry stone walls, and buy fine wool products at Topsy Farms and fine art and crafts at the Weasel and Easel.  Make a day of it on Amherst Island!  Come early for breakfast or stay late for dinner at The Back Kitchen open 8 am to 8 pm.

What’s that Bird? Join Field Naturalist Mark Read and he'll help you answer this common question. After a 45-minute indoor introduction into the basics of bird identification (using stuffed specimens to learn from), Mark will then take you for a short walk (weather permitting) to put your new skills into action. Bring binoculars if you have them!

Mark currently holds the Education Chair with Kingston Field Naturalists and is responsible for maintaining and reporting upon bird sightings in the Kingston area. He has been birding for nearly 40 years and, originally from the UK, has travelled extensively as an educator and researcher in SE Asia, Egypt and Nepal.

Claire de Sévigné, a coloratura soprano and Aviva Fortunata,a dramatic lyric soprano, will perform along with pianist Jenna Douglas, who plays and coaches for the COC. Demo Thursday: Heritage Masonry with John Scott

John Scott will be speaking about stonemasonry with a focus on dry stone walls, their history, construction methods, styles and if weather permits a brief practical demonstration outside. John Scott is a traditionally trained stonemasonry consultant working in the conservation of heritage masonry structures in Canada and abroad. A licensed stonemason and a certified dry stone waller, John is a professor of historic masonry conservation and practical construction at the Algonquin College Heritage Institute in Perth, Ontario. A professional member of Dry Stone Canada, John is a certified walling instructor and holds a diploma in Heritage and Traditional Masonry and an applied degree majoring in Heritage Resource Management.

Irish Language School: Summer Gaeltacht Immersion Week

The Summer Gaeltacht Immersion Week provides attendees with a unique opportunity to learn the Irish language, and to participate in Irish culture, in Canada.  The event is run jointly by our local group in Tamworth/Erinsville and the Mayo County Council in Ireland.  The very best teachers are brought in from across Canada and the United States., and 3 special teachers are brought in from Mayo, Ireland.  Classes are held for all levels, from complete beginner to fluent speaker.  Attendees are encouraged to use the language both in and out of class.  Cultural workshops include: Social dancing, solo dancing, Celtic art, singing in Irish, instrumental music, Irish history and geography, Gaelic sports, Gaelic crafts.  Day passes for casual participants are available. Salt Water Moon

The gardens of the Allan Macpherson House & Park in Napanee will come alive with a live theatrical performance on August 17th & 18th. Michelle Langille and Michael MacEachern star in the Single Thread Theatre Company’s production of David French’s renowned Salt Water Moon. The gardens of Napanee's most well-known historic home will be centre stage for this production.

Meet stain glass artist, Howard Sandles and learn about the beautiful art of stain glass. If you are inclined, make your own Christmas sun catcher or ornament for $15.00 (payable to artist). Howard will lead you with placing your own glass pieces in a form and will work with you to solder your piece together to finish it off.

Howard Sandles is a retired elementary school teacher. He has been involved in stained glass for over thirty-five years and work with students in the classroom producing Christmas, Easter and Mother's Day gifts.  Howard is also teaches stained glass classes at The Glasshouse in Kingston.

Join Naneen Tyner on August 23rd and create your very own summer wine basket. In this workshop you will make your own reed woven wine bottle basket, a nice gift for yourself or that special friend.  An interesting fact about the age-old craft of basket making is that, while many other crafts have become mechanized, no one has ever invented a machine that can make baskets.  Naneen Tyner has been weaving baskets for the past 22 years and now designs her own patterns. The evening’s entertainment features talented performer Lotus Wight. He plays the banjo and the contrabass harmoniphonium for an unforgettable sound that you won't want to miss. Over his playing career, Lotus Wight embraced the music over which he had obsessed since his childhood. The Carolinas, the Mississippi Valley, West Virginia, Kentucky, and New England fed him the sounds of tradition and helped to form his unique sound.

This event is a reunion for the descendants of the founders of Old Hay Bay Church, built in 1792, or related to the families of the youth who drowned in 1819. A variety of exciting events are taking place during the weekend, including a twilight outdoor movie, tours of the local area, re-enactors of Fife and Drum, food vendors, presentations on aspects of pioneer life, dinners with entertainment, and the Annual Pilgrimage Service on Sunday afternoon featuring Dr. Malcolm Sinclair as guest speaker and musical guests the Salvation Army Band.
