In April 2013, local seniors put their creative minds to work for a poetry contest hosted by the Amherstview Public Library in conjunction with Briargate – Revera Retirement Living.

In total, 50 entries were received from 17 participants. Here are the winners and runner up entries in each category.

{jatabs type="content"}
[tab title="Humour"]

1. Hot Air
By Evelyn Dolan

When we came in from playing
We found Dad in quite a state.
He yelled, "The furnace keeps on running
I have to investigate."

We all went down to watch him.
First he laid his tools on the floor,
Then he turned some knobs, screwed some screws,
And peeked in some little doors.

He growled to himself as he kicked it
Hammered and banged it some more.
But nothing seemed to help
The furnace ran on as before.

He raced upstairs to the phone
Yelling, "I'll stop it one way or another!"
We kids were getting frightened
And wishing for our mother.

Just like magic, Mom appeared

And with one look around the place
Took in the situation
From hot air to Daddy's face.

She laughed, "Put down the phone Don,
For I can tell you why
The furnace keeps on running.
The thermostat's set too high!"

2. Computer Woes
By Doris Henderson

I stare at my computer.
It blankly stares at me.
My brain is not in gear yet.
I finally strike a key.

Then, head and brain connected.
I see my story form.
Creative juice is flowing.
My writer’s block gets warm.

My finger moving faster,
As words appear on-screen.
The page at last is finished.
Good grief! It’s gone, unseen.

Now try the mouse on this one,
Naught but an empty view.
Now what has happened this time?
Again I’m in a stew.

Just type the darn thing over.
Resigned I start the race.
Annoyed, when half way through it,
The first one jumps in place.

Now where’ve you been, I question?
But grab it while I can
And quickly start the printer,
Before it hides again.

I used to think computer
Were not as smart as us,
But often when it foils me,
I think that I’m the wuss.

[/tab][tab title="LIfe Experience"]

1. Family
By Jacqueline Hughes

When it comes to family, my joy never ends,
I’ve been blessed beyond measure, my children, my friends,
Times I need a shoulder or a place to unwind,
My family are friends, the truest of kind.

Daughter’s I’ve three, son’s I have two,
There were times that were hard but somehow I knew,
Work hard, trust God, see the bright rainbows end,
I’ve found much to treasure in these five best friends.

Our home was quite simple, there are cobwebs galore,
More dirt on the table than you’d find on some floors,
There was never much money, still isn’t you see,
But with five best friends, I’m very wealthy.

When my hair is all silver, steps starting to slow,
Well-to-do folks start to stare.
I’ll still count my blessings, right till the end,
For the love of my five best friends.

Some day when the roll is called and I go,
To a greater reward so they say,
I’ll thank my God person-a-lly,
For giving me five best friends,

And by the way, I have a husband too.

2. Carolyn
By Gerald Harvey

It was Love at first sight
On that Saturday night
And I knew I must take a chance.
Down the hill from the hall
I confronted that Doll
And asked her to save me a dance.

She knodded and smiled
And my heart it went wild
Now I knew the meaning of bliss.
At Mrs. Gibson's snack bar
I met the best and by far
Now nothing would ever top this.

Oh the music was grand
From Bill Hanah's fine band
And I asked and Carol quickly obliged.
All I could do is adore
As we circled the floor
And I held her with pleasure and pride.

The last waltz it was mine
This I took as a sign
And asked if I might see her home.
Again she knodded and smiled
Again my heart it went wild
It was like a verse from a beautiful poem.

The courtship was great
With our Saturday night date
And on Sunday we would go for a drive.
It was grace from above
That brought me this love
Now I was happy and very alive.

Carol became my wife
For the rest of her life
And seven wonderful children she bore.
She left us one day
In a permanent way
And now she's not with me no more.

Oh the music was grand
From Bill Hanah's fine band
And I asked and Carol quickly obliged
All I could do is adore
As we circled the floor
And held her with pleasure and pride.

1. Seeding Hope
By Peggy Flanagan

I brought a seed home from retreat
And put it in a pot.
With all that happened ever since,
It promptly was forgot.

But while at prayer this early morn
I thought I heard a yawn.
There, before my very eyes,
Green, new life was born.

"Welcome to this world," I said.
"Thanks for your gift of hope.
Earth's full of stormy things,
But I know somehow you'll cope."

2. Sunday Drive
By Joe Elmer Veley

All the hills have come alive
for the easy teething of the spring,
When healthy fresh breezes arrive
Tempting the new seasons awakening,

Plants and grasses ancestry sprout
to the rhythms of the rain,
Left over from a winters drought
sweet gifts down memory lane,

Birds begin their silk routines
of finding special dry grasses,
Reading most building magazines
in case their nest needs new lashes,

Ground hogs begin sweeping floors
for all their pillows need refluffing,
As they go about knocking on doors
asking rabbits for soft downy stuffing,

Even squirrels play tic tac and shove
as the young learn the game of tag,
Dancing on branches high up above
to the music of a horse shoe peg,

My how the hills have come alive
as perhaps I most surely knew,
From the path of a childhood drive
along the shoreline of Amherstview.
